In case you haven’t noticed, some of our meeting rooms here at the library have been supplied with brand new Macbooks. For people who have Macs at home and are familiar with most Apple products, this may be exciting news. But if you haven’t used Macs before and have been a PC user for as long as you can remember, adapting to Macs can be extremely frustrating. After discussing some of the common confusions about using Macs with some of my colleagues, I was inspired to write a guide and a few tips to help those who are foreign to Mac usage.

Basics
The first thing one notices about the trackpad on a Mac is that it only has one button, as opposed to a right and a left button, which other computer brands use. To right-click, press the CTRL button while also clicking the trackpad button. If you are trying to copy/paste text, you have to press down the trackpad button while you use your finger to scroll over the text you want (copied text will become highlighted in blue). Then ctrl-click to view the copy/paste menu.

To search for documents, applications, and other items on the computer, you go to ‘Finder’, as you would go to ‘File’ on a Windows computer. There everything is categorized alphabetically by what kind of programs and documents are available or saved on the computer. To move items to different folders, simply drag (click and hold trackpad) the icon for that item into a different folder. A shortcut for this is ‘Command + Spacebar’.

Command vs Control Keys

The command key is to be used with additional keys in order to perform various tasks and shortcuts. You will notice that if you close a window or program, it doesn’t disappear, and the program will still be running. To officially close a window or program, you have to press ‘Command+Q’. Here are some more shortcuts:

Command + C= Copy (you have to highlight or select what you need copied)
Command + V= Paste
Command + T= Opens a new browser window

Here is an extensive, more elaborate list of Control/Command shortcuts:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343

Using Macs in the Meeting Rooms

Introducing Macbooks to the library’s meeting rooms can enhance the efficiency and communication for attendants and their hosts. Several programs and software that come with Macbooks allow one to audio or video record their meeting, video chat, take photos, and other applications.

Each laptop has a built in camera on the top of the monitor. You can use Photobooth and iMovie to photograph or film your event. If you need to include someone in your meeting who lives far away or couldn’t attend, you can video chat with them over the internet using the built in camera. Another useful tool is Garageband, with which you can make an mp3 recording of your meeting or lesson.

To set up the projector with the laptops in our meeting rooms, click the Apple logo in the upper left corner, then System Preferences, Display, and then Mirror Display.

I hope all of this information was helpful. Never hesitate to ask the librarians to help you set up equipment.

This month, Harper’s Index included some grim education statistics that got me thinking:

Minimum number of exams a student must take between third and twelfth grade under No Child Left Behind : 17

Percentage change since 1976 in the test-score gap between the children of America’s richest and poorest deciles : +40

Amount Florida spent per student on testing in 1996 : $4.44

Last year : $30.59

Percentage change since 1980 in California’s spending on public universities : –13

On prisons : +436

++++

Harper’s has a variety of sources for their material, which they post at the bottom of the index in the online version that is linked above. It got me thinking about original data, and where one might find statistics to incorporate into their own research papers or dissertations. Places to find statistics are abundant, and include:

National Center for Education Statistics

National Center for Health Statistics

Media Matters for America – Education Link

Guttmacher Institute

Another very extensive and multidisciplinary resource for original research is the Pew Research Center, who collect and publish data in many different sectors, including media studies, US politics, religion, technology, social trends, and global issues. If you specifically want to research a topic, such as education, you can do this by clicking the topics link on the homepage. From here, scroll down to the E section and choose education. They publish a number of reports you might find useful to your studies. Happy searching!

Yesterday, I finished Nicole Krauss’s beautiful novel Great House, a compactly written, deeply poignant book that follows the lives of a handful of characters influenced by a huge and majestic writing desk, which had been stolen from a Jewish family’s vacant house during the holocaust. Whenever I read Krauss’s writing, I am struck with the thought: how could she so deeply know her characters’ innermost emotions? How can she know the insides–so well–of so many different people? How has she felt so much? This novel, for instance, contains the line: “When at last I came across the right book the feeling was violent: it blew a hole open in me that made life more dangerous because I couldn’t control what came through it.” Ahhhh! Heart explosion! And that sentiment describes pretty well what it’s like to read her own work.

When I finished the book, my Kindle told me I should read other books “like” it. Specifically, it suggested that other people I’ve never met finished this book and tended to buy Junot Diaz’s This is How You Lose Her. This kind of advice can quickly become a self-fulfilling prophesy, and yet: I have wanted to read that book since it came out, and it’s not a bad suggestion that I read it next. Thanks, Kindle! I originally bought my Kindle because I appreciate the ink screen, and because I wanted to highlight passages and add notes. In practice, the Kindle works best when all you want to do is read, especially in a linear fashion, because taking notes is arduous, and because something about the software makes you feel boxed in to the text while reading it. Digital technology is fantastic in so many ways, and I assumed those ways would translate seamlessly into e-book reading (instantly searching passages by keywords, or flipping ahead to chunks of the book with a touch of a fingertip) but in practice, turning pages is way harder to do on an ink-screen Kindle than in a paper book, where flipping pages with one’s finger takes microseconds, and where, because you can visually recognize variations in the type on the pages themselves, the eye semi-instantly recognizes passages of the book. Paper is amazing technology, after all, as are fingertips. Kindle advertises that you will get lost in your book, and this is true: many times while changing subway trains I accidentally brushed the screen with my jacket and skipped ahead pages, or chapters, depending on my jacket’s movement, and I would return to my reading on an unfamiliar page, with unfamiliar things going on–a bewildering experience. And so because I recently bought an ipad mini I’ve been reading my e-books there through a Kindle app, a far preferable experience. But on an ipad I can purchase my e-books from any vendor, so I finally have a chance to buy Junot Diaz’s book from another book seller.

It surprised me that when I googled “Best Places to Buy E-Books” that most bloggers recommend only the top five: Kindle, iBooks, Sony, Nook, and Kobu. Do most people truly purchase objects non-politically? Maybe they do! I have a perhaps old-fashioned desire to buy books from bookstores rather than from tech companies, and so I searched instead for “Buy an E-Book Through an Indie Bookstore” and here I found my answer. I want to buy “indie” because it worries me that so few companies have so much capital power, and yet, physical bookstores work for physical books because their owners curate their selection, and because they have physical warmth. Does an independent e-book store provide that kind of service? I decided to find out.

Independent bookstores were on the verge of striking an e-book deal with Google, but it fell through when Google decided to sell books through it’s own service exclusively, instead. And so Kobu, itself an e-book reader giant, stepped in and made a deal with independent bookstores to sell Kobu e-books, which strikes me as one of the more intelligent moves Kobu could have made. Meanwhile, three independent bookstores are suing Amazon and the Big Six book publishers over the market clampdown proprietary e-book software has created, also an intelligent move if not an uphill battle. What will come of the e-book industry and the publishing industry at large? I can’t answer that.

But I can tell you where to find independent bookstores across the US participating in e-book sales.

I have to go: I need to buy the new Junot Diaz book from Elliot Bay, my favorite bookstore in Seattle.

Although questions at the circulation desk vary, a common question is in regards to borrowing privileges at the Gottesman Libraries.

The primary role of the Gottesman Libraries is to serve the teaching, research and scholarly activities of students, faculty, and staff of Teachers College. To best fulfill this mission, access policies are in effect, requiring members of Teachers College and affiliated institutions, namely Columbia University, Barnard College, Union Theological and Jewish Theological seminaries, to show a member ID to Security staff upon entering the campus. A current TC identification card allows full reading and borrowing privileges at the Gottesman Libraries and throughout all of Columbia University Libraries.

For information on accessing the archives, please see the Application to Use the Archives of Teachers College.

Alumni

For information on all the services available to Teachers College Alumni, please visit the Alumni Services page.

METRO (New York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency) Members

Residents of the New York Metropolitan area may use materials in the Gottesman Libraries when items are not available elsewhere in the city. New York residents must have a METRO courtesy card referral from their local institution or public library (including the New York Public Library). METRO Courtesy Cards should be presented to Security upon entering Zankel Building.

Research Libraries Group (RLG) Members

Students, faculty, and academic or professional staff of RLG member institutions are entitled to reading privileges upon presentation of appropriate institutional identification to the Zankel Building Security Desk. Persons affiliated with RLG institutions located in the New York metropolitan area are governed by METRO (see above).

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholar is a category of appointment to the College at the recommendation of a dean, director, or chairperson of a department. Visiting Scholars may register with the Office for Security, bringing documentation of the appointment.

For further information about access or borrowing privileges, please contact us.

If you are searching for an interactive video social media space to help your classroom actively (and digitally) debate theoretical concepts that emerge when watching video, look no further than EdLab’s own Vialogues software. A combination of the words “video” and “dialogue,” Vialogues is an interactive social media tool developed specifically for educators looking to use video in a more dynamic way in their classrooms.

Who can open an account? You! Anyone can create and use a Vialogues account.

How do I get started? Easily. Click this link, choose “login” on the upper right hand corner of the screen, select “create an account,” and then fill in the information.

What can I do with Vialogues, now that I have this account? Vialogues allows you to post video, re-post or share existing video, or embed videos from YouTube onto the site. Once created, you can invite your students to watch the video and post live commentary. This commentary is saved as part of the video so that you can re-watch it and discuss it in class. The professor (i.e. the moderator) can post questions or create surveys at specific times within the video for a facilitated discussion. These video-dialogues can be made private or public and, if desired, can be re-posted or reused by others within the community of Vialogues. (You can also easily tweet or embed your vialogue on another website.)

Can you show me an example? Yes. First of all, see the top of this post. I embedded that video directly from the Vialogues site onto this one, and because EdLab software products are interoperable, you can interact with this video directly from this blog if you are logged in to Vialogues.

Additionally, Vialogue’s home page directs you immediately to two options: create or explore. To see hundreds of examples of vialogues, simply click “explore” to see thumbnail examples of past vialogues. Directly above these examples is a small link called “most active.” Click this to see videos with the most commentary. To search for videos on a certain theme, you can use the search bar which is displayed at the top center of the screen. This is also a useful tactic if you’d like to re-post an existing vialogue rather than upload a new video of your own.

[Click this image above to view it larger.]

I’m convinced! How do I create a vialogue? Now you’re going to select the other option on the main Vialogues page, “create.” Clicking this leads you to a very simple page asking you to either upload your own video, re-post an existing vialogue, or pull a video in from YouTube by pasting the URL. Next, add your descriptive terms, and click “create.” This will lead you to a new screen where you will choose whether to make the video private (your invitees need to be members of Vialogues; have your students create accounts on the first day of class) or public. If you decide against uploading this particular video, you can delete it by clicking the advanced tab down below, and click “delete.” Otherwise, click create and your video is live!

Now that I’ve made this video, I want to manage it. That’s reasonable. You can mange the settings, delete the video, delete the comments to the video, or embed questions or polls into the video. First, go to your own account settings to view your uploaded vialogues. Access to your account lives on the upper right hand section of the screen. Click your name, then “view profile” to see your vialogues. Now click the vialogue itself, and you’ll be in the screen where you and your students can interact with the video. Notice that right below the video itself is a comment box. Hit play on the video, and when you reach the moment where you’d like to pose a question, hit pause, type your comment in the box, then hit “post.” Easy! If you’d like to add a poll, click the Q&A box also located underneath the video. Type in your question, and add your poll questions by following the prompts. If you want to change your privacy settings, click the very small “manage” link located below the comment box under the video. You’ll be back on the “manage settings” screen where you can adjust how your users see your video. You can also view responses to your poll here, close the video for future commentary, or delete the video.

[The yellow circle indicates the comment box. The yellow arrow directs you to where the comments appear once posted. Click this image to see it larger.]

Using Vialogues is fairly intuitive, but if any questions come up, there is a handy FAQ sheet at the very bottom of the every screen under “help.” And if you have questions not answered by the FAQ sheet, click the “contact us” link right next to the “help” link.

Happy vialoguing! (Is that a word? It is now.)
