As an Organizational Psychology major, I often hear about motivation and goal-setting in class. Without either, we are simply task-doers lacking the ability to efficiently achieve our goals. With clearly defined goals and a timeline in which to achieve them, the possibility of success is much greater. The widely used acronym in business is SMART goals:

S – specific
M – measurable
A – attainable
R – result-oriented
T – time-bound

As in any scientific experiment, one must have a method. The method for goal-achievement involves the above characteristics. Clarifying your goals allows you to break them down, time them, and ensure they are attainable. This allows you to stay on track.

Regarding motivation — you cannot achieve your goals if you’re not motivated to do so. So, think about what motivates you or get some inspiration from others. I find TED talks to be amazing and inspiring.

If you have some time, there is a great, relatively-short eBook available on the CLIO (Columbia University Online Catalog) site:

Title: Motivation and goal-setting how to set and achieve goals and inspire others

Author: Jim Cairo

Publisher: Career Press, 1998

Simply click “eBook Full Text” on the left portion of the screen to access the entire eBook

This is our library: the Gottesman Libraries. The books are in the tower; the rest is in the adjoining Russell Hall. This is our space, and our community’s space. You might say we (the library staff) merely preside over it. Or something. But of course we aim to do much more. We are trying to create a library of the future.

You might ask us what that is. It’s a learning space, a social space, a digital space, and a dusty space. There are a lot of nooks and crannies where things happen… and we’ll be using this site to share our successes, failures, and ideas for designing better learning environments.

What is a library?

in the 20th century…
after card catalogs have gone away…
after the dewey decimal system has gone away…
after Google has crawled the web…
after Wikipedia has matured into the best encyclopedia…
with millions of books and tens of millions of articles online…
with learners using their own laptops…
and a Starbucks around every corner…

We’re not really sure. But, like many others, we’re trying to figure it out. Please contact us if you’re interested in our work. We’d love to hear about your ideas, and if you’re engaging similar projects, there may be ways we can collaborate.
