Romantic, Delightful Songs with Library Related Themes or Settings
Today, I was listening to my Iphone/Ipod (I guess the Iphone is now a million different apps in one phone now) on the train and saw that I had a song on there by My Morning Jacket, a band I really enjoy listening to. There was a song I listened to a while back that was called “Librarian” and it didn’t have much resonance for me personally until I started working at the Gottesman Library. Whenever the rare chance pops up that I hear a song about anything related to the library or librarians, in my head I go “woooh!”.
Here are a couple songs with library or librarian-related themes. Some songs are quite awesome and show how cool librarians really are. Others on the list are great because they dramatize the typical, peaceful setting of a library. Most of the songs on here are slightly romantic, but aren’t most great songs romantic? If you’ve got any other songs you know of that aren’t on the list feel free to comment and add :
1. Librarian by My Morning Jacket
“Walk across the courtyard, towards the library.
I can hear the insects buzz and the leaves ‘neath my feet…
Ramble up the stairwell, into the hall of books…
Since we got the interweb these hardly get used.”
2. Young Adult Friction by the Pains of Being Pure at Heart
“I never thought I would come of age let alone on a moldy page”
3. Library Card by Frank Zappa
“Library bar-code, PE label Student must carry this card at all times, And present upon demand for identification . . . You may be liable for any unauthorized use of this card prior to notifying the used card office.”
4. Swinging London by the Magnetic Fields
“I read your manifestos and your strange religious tracts. You took me to your library and kissed me in the stacks.” Awww . . .
5. Campus by Vampire Weekend
“Then I see you, you’re walking across the campus
Cruel professor studying romances”
This song doesn’t talk about libraries, but whenever I hear it I envision a scene where Columbia students who spent a studious day at the library studying for class leave to go meet up with their friends (or lovers!) to take a study break. The song takes place on Columbia’s campus and was written by the Columbia alum band Vampire Weekend.
