Strage Prize 2014 with Hansun Waring

| November 17, 2014

Congratulations to 2014 Strage Prize recipient Hansun Waring, Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Teachers College Columbia University. This video focuses on a discussion of the research behind her recent paper: “Doing Being Playful in the Second Language Classroom” as well the LANSI Conference she began at TC.

Dr. Waring’s teaching and research deal with the relationship between language and social interaction: her study provides empirical support for the utility of playful talk in previously unexamined contexts such as the ESL classroom; the Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI) is the manifestation of her vision to create an academic venue for research and discussion on the topic. At Teachers College, Dr. Waring’s courses include discourse analysis, conversation analysis, classroom discourse and applied linguistics and TESOL.

The production and publication of this video is supported by the Strage Junior Faculty Prize, established in 2009 by Teachers College alumna Alberta Strage and her husband Henry to recognize junior faculty achievement. Alberta also serves on both the President’s Advisory Council and the International Advisory Council for Teachers College. We appreciate both their generosity to Teachers College and support for the work of our junior faculty.
