Creating a library of the future

Postcard of Russell Hall Tower

This is our library: the Gottesman Libraries. The books are in the tower; the rest is in the adjoining Russell Hall. This is our space, and our community’s space. You might say we (the library staff) merely preside over it. Or something. But of course we aim to do much more. We are trying to create a library of the future.

You might ask us what that is. It’s a learning space, a social space, a digital space, and a dusty space. There are a lot of nooks and crannies where things happen… and we’ll be using this site to share our successes, failures, and ideas for designing better learning environments.

What is a library?

in the 20th century…
after card catalogs have gone away…
after the dewey decimal system has gone away…
after Google has crawled the web…
after Wikipedia has matured into the best encyclopedia…
with millions of books and tens of millions of articles online…
with learners using their own laptops…
and a Starbucks around every corner…

We’re not really sure. But, like many others, we’re trying to figure it out. Please contact us if you’re interested in our work. We’d love to hear about your ideas, and if you’re engaging similar projects, there may be ways we can collaborate.
