War, Money, and Socratic Highlights

| May 4, 2012

Can We Stop Wars? was the subject of the Socratic Conversation conducted by Ron Gross on Friday, May 3rd — and a prevailing view of the discussants was “Follow the money!” A conflict resolution practitioner with experience ranging from Israel/Palestine to the Philippines said, “All wars are really over economic interests.” Another participant advised: “If you want to know what the U.S. priorities are, just look at a pie-chart of the federal budget, and see how fat that military piece is.” But others in the group contended that we might yet see beyond belligerent self-interest, and cited the optimistic views expressed in recent books like The End of War by John Horgan, and The Better Angels of Our Nature by Stephen Pinker.

Please be sure to join us for our next Socratic conversation on Thursday, June 14th: What Money Can’t Buy (details coming soon).
