Harlem Week 2013

| August 8, 2013

I noticed a long line this morning stretching across 120th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam. After a little investigating, I realized this was for a career fair on Columbia University’s main campus. The career fair is in conjunction with Harlem Week 2013. Harlem Week, you ask? Here is a snippet from the official Harlem Week website:

“HARLEM WEEK began in 1974 as HARLEM DAY, a day of encouragement and fellowship in Harlem for New Yorkers.  Given the huge success of the celebration, more days were added to showcase the community’s rich economic, political and cultural history.”

If you’d like to read more about Harlem (its rich history, renaissance, famous artists and activists) type “Harlem” in the keyword area in EDUCAT to view the works in our collection or CLIO to view Columbia’s collection. Any suggestions, comment below!

Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of Harlem Week. The events, which take place all over Harlem between July 28th – August 24th, range from film screenings to outdoor music festivals, to career fairs, sports events, green markets, street fairs, gallery tours, health education events, dance performances and much more.
